## LEED professional credentials

The U.S. Green Building Council administers professional credentials connected to the LEED green-building rating system. LEED Green Associate demonstrates foundational knowledge of green-building concepts and LEED. LEED Accredited Professional, usually written LEED AP with a specialty, is intended for deeper knowledge in a particular LEED rating system.

USGBC states that the Green Associate exam has no prerequisite. For a LEED AP credential, a candidate must hold an active LEED Green Associate credential, although the Green Associate and AP exams can be combined in an approved combined format. Candidates should select the specialty that matches their work, such as building design and construction, operations and maintenance, interior design and construction, neighborhood development, or homes.

Credentials require ongoing maintenance. The official USGBC credential overview currently specifies a two-year reporting period. Green Associates report 15 continuing-education hours, including three LEED-specific hours. LEED AP credential holders report 30 hours, including six LEED-specific hours. Exam versions and maintenance rules can evolve as the LEED rating system changes, so candidates should confirm the current handbook and exam information before registering.

LEED credentials can be relevant to architecture, engineering, construction, facilities, interiors, and sustainability roles. They do not certify a building by themselves and do not guarantee employment or a salary increase. A project's certification and an individual's professional credential are distinct.
